In honor of the news that the band Death Cab of Cutie is coming to Singapore for a concert (Aug 12, tickets go on sale at Sistic.com.sg on June 27), I would like to share one of my fav tracks from their latest album, Narrow Stairs.

The thing I’ve always enjoyed the most about DCoC is of the lyrical imagery that is used throughout most of their songs. They tell a story, usually of the human condition living in this our modern era, vividly with the music counterpointing the key emotion or depth of the feelings involved. It’s like most of their songs can be summed up in a simple image; something that you might come across in an old photo album or magazine. You will first get a basic idea of the picture when you glance at it, just like how you’ll pick out hints in a first listen of a DCoC song. But as you take time to muse over the picture, details of the feeling behind the shot and of the subjects will slowly come into focus or tickle your imagination. DCoC songs does the same with words and musical arrangement.

It’s the same with the track I’ve picked out below, tells a simple story that is all too common nowadays but also contains imagery wordplay; in this case Maths. You know it just had to be slightly geeky somehow.

Long Division
by Death Cab for Cutie from Narrow Stairs

His head was a city
of paper buildings,
and the echoes that remain.
Both friends and lovers
their features bleeding
together in his brain.
Once it started, it was harder to tell them apart.

He was always distracted
by the very mention of an open door
’cause he had sworn not to be what he’ve been before
to be a remain, remain, remain-der (x2)

Television, snowing softly, as she hunted for her keys
she said she never envisioned, him the kind of person,
capable of such deceit

Then they carried on like, long division
as it was clear with every page,
that they were further away
from a solution that would play
without a remain, remain, remain-der (x4)

He had sworn not to be what he’ve been before
to be a remain, remain, remain-der
to be the remain, remain, remain-der

Singing along out loud to Dashboard Confessional’s “So Impossible EP” is quite fun and a great way to de-stress. I had re-discovered it, while catching up on what new releases my favorite bands have come up with recently.

While more details can be found here, allow me to sum it up.

So Impossible is a concept album, in this case the tracks of the album come together to tell complete story, with a fixed beginning and end. The album consists of 4 tracks:

For You to Notice – Lyric example:

I'm starting to fashion an idea in my head
Where I would impress you,
Where every single word I said
Would come out insightful or brave, or smooth, or charming

Opening the story, this track talks about a couple who have feelings for each other but so far have only watched and hoped from afar. I’m sure everyone has ever hoped that a certain someone would notice them and thus can relate to this track

So Impossible – Lyric example:

Do you, do you like dreaming
Of things so impossible?
Or only the practical,
Or ever the wild?

My favorite track, I always wonder how this track would sound like if it was performed as what it was written as, namely as a duet. Here the girl, strikes up a conversation with the guy, inviting him to a party. Together they share of their likes and dislikes and if the other have the same views. Seemingly in agreement, they agree to attend the party together.

Remember to Breathe -Lyric example:

I'm starting to panic.
Remember she asked you,
"Remember to bre-athe,
And every-thing will be o-kay."

The best part of this track is the ending where the guy starts to get worried and he reminds himself to breathe and calm down. It’s delivered with a range of emotions, one of which is desperation; hoping that he will clam down and not mess things up.

Hands Down -Lyric example:

And you stood at your door with your hands on my waist,
And you kissed me like you meant it,
And I knew that you meant it.

Without a doubt my most favorite track of the whole album. This song is both so full of hope, and yet hints at a possible future lost, as young love usually is.

Just a whole lot of carefree nostalgia this album brings to mind. Lovely to listen to on a slow downtrodden night.
