Right. So once again i’ve come around to getting back to this blog. Why? Perhaps Twitter, Plurk & Facebook aren’t the usual distractions that they have been from blogging today. Is it because I keep seeing that 1 full year from my last post is fast approaching. Or did I get some new muse that demands that I break out of the 140-160 character limit?

All of the above. And maybe none at all. I just kinda miss writting. I kinda miss being able to have thoughts that actully add up to something.

But seriously, that one year since last post is really scary.

Guess the first thing I should do is look into updating the WordPress engine that runs this & get a new theme. Not really looking forward to messing with CSS, plug-in’s & wigets to get things just the way I want them. But the neglect that been going on here is just horrible.

I Live!…again!

Yes, just like GLaDOS, this blog is indeed ‘Still Alive’. And while the Cake is not a lie, it remains to be seen if I indeed can have my cake and eat it too.

Much changes here at the Edge, together with the long awaited upgrade to WordPress 2.5 comes a new Theme and, hopefully, a little more simplified site navigation experience.

A quarter into the new year and you have no idea the amount of frustration I’ve been fielding due to this word constipation as a friend puts it. After awhile, I simply had to walk away and not allow myself to dwell on this for too long, hence all the neglect that does nothing to break the hold of the lack of content appearing here.

But as it always is with me, while I may walk away, I always come back. In one form or other.

The funny thing about change; as it happens you always hope that it is for the best. That’s natural. And thus it’s logical to assume that for something to get better, you have to change it in some way. Be it a change in job, mindset, habit or responsibility.

And so here I am, once again on the precipice of a major life change and as usual, I said to heck with it and just front load the bugger with even more changes, like re-vamping the Edge and in the above mentioned areas. Best to get it all out of the way together in one shot and see what sticks.

I’m back Baby. And the party is just beginning.

…and the latest major version of WordPress blogging software (code name ‘Ella‘) was released.

And now The Edge has been upgraded to match! Heh, I just had some free time in the afternoon and I didn’t want to be neglecting the blog again, so a round of backing up and upgrading seemed perfect.

As with all the past versions of WordPress, I have had little problems with the upgrade. Only one plug-in got broken and not in a critical manner. That should be fixed soon enough once the plug-in author updates it to match.

Apart from the underlying enhances to the blogging engine and database, which I swear to learn much more about someday, there are few but major new features that have been added. Better control over the Blogroll and Categories is nice and all, but the big selling point for me is new editor…with SPELLCHECK.

…to me that deserves a whole new major number change to v3.0 instead of just v2.1 …

..which is just that sad really, but my spelling has never been a strong point. *Sigh* even my strengths have flaws. Keeps me humble I guess

The interface looks so much more pimping, here’s hoping that it helps get more creative juices going..

Got a few of the Blog plug-ins that I have been messing with working and active at the moment. You can see them around the Edge if you try hard enough. For example:

Have a dedicated Archive page now. Click on the Year, then month and the posts for just that period will appear. Still a work in progress. Would like the year/month to highlight when clicked.

Tags: Kinda like a second layer of categories. Aiming for it to be a less “formal” grouping of the post but instead to highlight certain words or subjects that come up. Would be interesting to see what becomes the most common keyword after I finish updating all the old posts.

Recent Comments: As a way to keep better up to date with discussions going on in various posts, this section in the left sidebar will show the 3 most recent comments. Got the idea from Vickiho actually.

Comment Subscriptions: For those very very few who actually bother to comment on the posts, a way to get email alerts for when someone (or just me) put in with a comment of our own. Really would like to have more discussions with many more people throwing in their 2 cents worth around here.

Related Posts: Shows other posts that may have related (some really vague) connections with the contents of the selected posts. Also “stolen” from Vickiho.

Still a few other plug-ins that I would like to get working. Frankly the list above seem to be the easy ones, the others are a little more trickly.

Oh, and here is one last one:

Well here we go again. The end of yet another month and soon I will enter into the 4th year with this blog. It doesn’t seem like so long ago that I started this and blah blah blah…

Sometimes (like now) I wonder why I bother trying to do keep track and try to do something special each year on this month. Does it matter that I do something “special” each year? It’s just a blog, by now it should be like an integrated part of my life. Something that I can or should do without conscious thought or consideration. Like picking up my phone and sending someone an SMS. Do I celebrate it a year later? Is it normal if I do? Maybe perhaps if I had proposed to someone via SMS and she said yes, then there is reason to celebrate. (then again who the hell would propose via SMS??)

On the other hand. It is good to be aware that improvements should be looked into and implemented over time. Some of the best websites are upgraded constantly over years and in some sense, its like an evolution of sorts. Just like how the archives are a record of my thoughts and can be used to see how things have evolved over time (if any), the changing of the blog’s design, features and layout are a form of evolution as well.

And I guess evolution can’t be rushed or put to a schedule. I will continue to add and change things as I see fit over time and it should be fine. Just as long as I don’t ignore it too much.
