Back into the full swing of things now that my week of Reservist is over. I find that Reservist is just one of those things that just dwells in our mind as part of the Image of Singapore for those of us who are Native and born on this Island. Kinda like those little things you remember while leaving overseas that provide “color” to our memories of home; like chicken rice, your first BCG injection or continued re-runs of local sit-coms like Phua Chu Kang and Under One Roof.
So to all males who have finished the initial National Service period, it is an established fact of life that we will end up making that annual trek back to back to the Sea of Green. Just like a school of green clad Salmon swimming back to familiar pools for the solo purpose of spawning off-color jokes in Hokkien.
Personally, I use it as a way to re-familiarize myself with my usual enviroments like home or work, to break up the routine so to speak. Very much like going on a vacation while on leave. But while a normal vacation is usually to refresh oneself leaving you reluctant to go back to your normal life, I like to take Reservisit as a time were almost no rest is gained and to remind myself not to take for granted what I have already been blessed with.
Be it food, or accommodation’s or being out of touch with one’s friends, I try to use it to refresh my personal view. And since my Reservist seem to now be set to fall in the beginning of the year, it would be easy to just count it as the point where my New Year really starts in the future.
The thing I find strange is that I expect myself to actually write more during this time, since I there are much less distractions. But somehow that doesn’t seem to happen. I know that a fair share of reflection is done during such times but it all seems to be…”internalize” and I can’ seem to put in down in paper somehow.
But I know changes took place and that it paves the way for the rest of the year. It will be interesting to see things unfold, reacting to the new re-alignments that have taken place within.
