Dual Boot: Ubuntu + Windows XP

As the on-going support for and recognition of Ubuntu continues, Lifehacker.com has just posted an Article on how to Triple Boot Ubuntu, Windows XP and the beta of Windows Vista.

I always figured Lifehacker.com to be mainly focused on Windows stuff when it comes to software or tricks/tips, but on hindsight it shouldn’t really be surprising. After all there are tons of Windows software out there and Windows deserves all the tweaks and tips that can be found.

But besides that, they have been including alot of Mac stuff as well

Frankly I think that triple booting is a bit excessive and would most likely take up more time in learning the ins and outs of each OS rather than getting anything productive done. Also, I would make sure than all three OS’s stay on the same harddisk and all the important data on another with backups as well. Then again, keeping important data on another disk besides the one that the OS is on is a pretty basic computing practise.

Back to the article, some very important points:

  1. Installing Windows first – a good idea since Windows is cranky that way, once Windows is installed, the rest of the partitions for Ubuntu can be easily setup from within Windows itself first. Also use quick format, easy mistake to overlook
  2. The use of Automatix to help setup useful applications and codexs after installing Ubuntu - Part of the deal with Ubuntu, is that it comes only with Open Source applications. This means that things we usually take for granted in computing are not activated by default, especially multimedia things like the playing of MP3, and the more popular video formats such as .avi and Quicktime .mov files.

So for people still wondering about trying out Ubuntu but afraid to make the jump because of losing Windows, this guide is a good place to start.

I myself have been dual-booting for the last 7 months and it’s been pretty smooth going. And I love the versatility that it has been giving me.

Anyone have any questions on Ubuntu, feel free to ask and I’ll answer to the best that I can. If you need CD’s, I still have a few lying around.

That is pretty much needless to say Vic. Your CD has been reserved for some time now.

Just a matter of picking it up…
