A rather Dapper Day

Announcing Ubuntu 6.06 LTS

The Ubuntu team is proud to announce the release of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, codenamed “Dapper Drake”. This release includes both installable Desktop CDs and alternate text-mode installation CDs for several architectures, for Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Edubuntu.

Ubuntu is a Linux distribution for your desktop or server, with a fast and easy install, regular releases, a tight selection of excellent packages installed by default, every other package you can imagine available with a few clicks from a global network of mirrors, and professional commercial technical support from Canonical Ltd and hundreds of other companies around the world.

Ubuntu 6.06 LTS will be the first Ubuntu release with a long-term support cycle: free security updates and commercial technical support will be available for three years on the desktop, and five years on the server.

Been messing around with this after updating my current version, and I am very impressed with the performance and added features with this release. The Live CD idea is totally golden, and I will be trying to get anyone even remotely interested in overcoming all their Windows problems they face from day-to-day to pop in the Live CD and test drive Ubuntu for awhile.

Spoke to Vicki about Ubuntu and she is willing to try it out herself. Hoping to find out how she finds it and I’m glad for finally having someone to talk to about Ubuntu. That’s if she finds it to her liking of course.

I was planning on giving a review on the various functions and software I have used in Ubuntu, but I somehow got a splitting headache and can barely gather together my thoughts.

The only major big tip I can offer at the moment for anyone doing the full install of Ubuntu, should check out the program Automatix that helps setup your fresh install for you. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have if you are trying it out.

  1. [...] Many, many uncountable thanks to Colin whose initial enthusiasm over Ubuntu made me want to try this out, and who patiently dealt with much e-panicking over MSN when drives wouldn’t partition and so on. I’d ask everyone to call him if they wanted personalised Linux help, but then I might not get a chance to tap his brain should he get a deluge of help requests. [...]
