My mother has been in the sales line for more than twenty years. In that time, she has made clients from people she meets at everyday events. from them she is introduced to new people who then know others, and so forth. It is the nature of her line of work.
Out of this, one of the things that she has always tried to drill into me was the need to “network“. In a way I guess I did take her advice to heart going into computers and all. Heh. That’s the wrong kind of networking. But has the same manner of importance in both fields.
The problem is that I am not really a people person and thus when it came to handling the movements of aquantces, even those whom I knew would be beneficial to keep in touch with, I just fell behind.
It’s a pity really for someone who claims to treasure information as much as I say I do. And while I do regret ,as per my usual, I barely do anything to change.
Until something comes along to drop a great big reminder that is. Just a week ago, fellow Nougat Merry started helping her brother to sell off left over open bundle sets of the Treo 650 for half the price of retail. Now I’m a big fan of Palm devices, and the Treo 650 is about the best pda/combo out there (for now at least) and so I just had to jump at this chance. If I had not had regained contact with Merry after all these years, this would have been yet another opportunity that would have passed me by.
The same would go for the tickets to the Fort Minor concert just last week that my long lost cousin suddenly just dropped into my lap.
While all this seems just very materialistic, the importance of having contacts extents beyond that. Friends of friends, future job offers and even just for the sharing of hobbies and Good News.
Time to put that investment of time that I have back into people instead of just losing them to the ether.
