Transparency Revealed

Was pointed to Victioria Ho’s blog yesterday by my old friend Spiro. The blog was a delightful read, with snappy writting and humorous wisecracks. Can’t really say more until I read further on.

However, while there was no problems accessing the blog from work. It seems that both Spiro and even Vicki herself (!) are having problems getting to the blog at home.

So I tried it out for myself last night and I encountered the same problem.

I have seem this kind of thing before as it is due to the transparent proxies not updating their cache correctly. Normally this sort of thing will solve itself over time, as the proxies update their caches during regular maintenance. However it is a good idea to check with the webhost who is hosting the site, if they can propagate the website again or if they is any conflict with say the registrar where the domain name was registered with. I had the same problem myself when I transfered www.falchion.per.sg from Pac Net to Focushub.

In the meantime, there is a workaround which can be use for the short term. It is not recommended to use this for too long, since it just takes up more bandwidth and is nowhere as fast as the normal proxies.

For Firefox 1.5 users:
1.) Go to-> Tools -> options
2.) Select the ‘General‘ tab then click on ‘Connection Settings‘ button.
3.) Take note of the current setting for you will want to change back to this in the future.
4.) Select the radio button for “Manual Proxy Configuration“, the textboxes under it should now light up.
5.) Go to this website and look for a proxy address to use.
6.) I recommend a proxy with a Port number of 8080 and is of type ‘transparent‘.
7.) Enter the proxy number and port number into the ‘HTTP proxy’ textbox .
8.) Do not check the checkbox under it called “Use proxy for all protocols“.
9.) In the “no proxy” textbox, type in ’192.168.1.0/16′ and 192.168.0.0/16′ (this numbers actually depend on how your network is set up, I’m just using the two most likely configurations)

And how hopefully the page can be accessed from home :)

Let me know if anymore help is needed.

hey, thanks a lot. :) but it still annoys me that it’s like this. will check with my webhost again, but i wonder what’s wrong with my/our home access.

I still say it’s most likely an ISP or ISPs issue. All leading back to the main Singapore or Asian proxy that they seem to link to. I say this because I know of a few websites that I can’t access from home, but I can access after changing the proxy or from work (since my workplace uses it’s own proxy it seems). It’s indeed very irritating, I remember fixing this problem once…but can’t remember…I think it involved calling my ISP to get them to do something.

dammit. calling the ISP and yelling may not be the best solution, even if it’s a very tempting option at the moment. hmmm. :(

  4. Falchion says:

Nono girl. That simply won’t work. For the fact that they are used to that. Don’t you know the number of people calling them up, screaming demands of “I can’t log on,fix The Internet!”. Or “My screen is blank, do something!” or the increasing popular “If my DVD is dual-layered, how come I don’t get anything when I turn it over?”

Compared to that, our issue of not seeing a few websites becomes trivial.

I suggest a quiet phone inquiry to them maybe during office hours..I’m sure they will appreciate the break from the unwashed masses…

ooooooooh never mind, i think the cache got reset or something—i can view my site from home now! whoopee. (no need for nice or not-so-nice call to starhub any longer…)

  6. Spiro says:

Cool! I’ll go back and try tonite… heh.
