Updates: Software & more

Well it finally seems like this domain access has stablised and about time too. This month of May seems to be one with many changes and this includes the Internet/Software side of things as well.

First big update involves the new version of FireFox. It’s up to version 1.0.4 now and there have been some comments about why a web browser which is supposed to have better security than the current mainstream browser would need 4 updates in about 6 months. Well the truth of the matter is, that there is no software on the planet that is truly error or bug free, just like there is no human on earth that has never made a mistake. In fact, we should be thankful that they do bother to update so often. This shows that as bugs and security holes are found, they as just as quickly patched by the developers, which ensures that Firefox remains as secure as possible.

Next is the new update for Winamp. It’s up to version 5.0.9 now and unfortunately I am unable to say much about it, seeing as how it doesn’t seem to be able to run on my comp. Apparently I’m not the only one with the same problem, so I’m quite pleased to be able to skip this update and stick with version 5.0.8, which runs without a problem for me. While I’m glad for the fact that Winamp will continue to be updated with fixes even though its’ no longer undergoing any large scale development, I kinda suspect that if the original complete development team where still around, these kinds of problems would not have surfaced. Then again, its quite hard to retain a development team on payroll when the product is already as stable and feature-filled as Winamp already is.

And lastly, there is a new update to WordPress, which is the very same blogging engine that this blog runs on. So far I’m not seeing any much difference, which means I either am barely scrapping the surface of what the program can do (which is the most likely) or that I am thankfully blessed to have avoided the situations that this new version 1.5.1 is said to address. Either way, I should look deeper into what lies under the WordPress engine hood since I have the time, maybe even learn to write a few plug-ins for it. I think it would look good on a resume.
