Triple E

It’s that time of the year again, in which large groups of unwashed masses wander around hallowed hallways amidst the droning of strange illegible chanting called rap music and the blinding sight of neon coloured lights and neon coloured bikini clad females. Indeed, it is their annual pilgrimage to Gaming Mecca, it is time for the Electronic Entertainment Expo. It is time for E3.

Basically, E3 is where all the developers and publishers of almost anything to do with video gaming, be it for the consoles (PlayStation, Xbox) for the the PC, gather to show off their future products and other upcoming wares. It is not limited to just the games software itself, but involves the hardware aspect of video gaming as well. In fact, it has become custom that big announcements be made at E3. This year is no different and is set to lay down a new field of battle in the gaming market with the unveiling of the so called, next generation of video consoles, the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. Those who know me know that I’m not really big on the consoles part of the market, but as I do actually own an Xbox (got it at a low price off someone who already had one, so get off my case) I’m wondering if I should bother taking time to compile my thoughts on these new consoles…

The 3 day show starts today in the States and throughout the whole event, there will be extensive news coverage at various sites. This is the big part of the whole thing for me frankly, as a somewhat news junkie and a somewhat gamer, the combination of the two leads to somewhat more enjoying reading experiences. I don’t know, there is something about pouring over news reports and picking up a gem of an article or impression of the next big thing in gaming. The reporters on site are usually too busy (or too hangover) to go indepth into what they come across, so it takes some ability to predict how a new project would take off, if ever. There is some guesswork involved, but one also needs to have knowledge of the background and history of the development team and even the publishers as well. Another handy trait to have is being able to see if the concept that is trying to be done is in fact possible with current (sometimes future) hardware developments and if the concept or story would actually catch on with the gaming majority. So far I haven’t been too bad, with City of Heroes being a recent game that I called long ago that would do well.

Some people wonder why I don’t seem to have any free time yet can post on stuff like this. Well, everyone needs a hobby…and if you think about it, the same can be said for me actually having a blog in the first place :)
